Summer Interview #2: Marianne Fatton
Olympic champion Marianne Fatton is using the summer to push her limits: from high-altitude training in St. Moritz to alpine adventures and her first 70-kilometer trail race at Wildstrubel by UTMB. In this interview, the Swiss athlete reveals why she’s deliberately stepping out of her comfort zone and how she’s recharging her batteries for the future.

What are the milestones of your summer training this year?
This summer is going to be especially exciting for me. For the first time, I’ll be experiencing high-altitude training with the Swiss triathlon team in St. Moritz—an experience I’m really looking forward to. Another highlight is the Wild 70 at Wildstrubel by UTMB. The 70-kilometer race is uncharted territory for me, and that’s exactly what appeals to me: After years of focusing on Olympic goals, I want to take on new challenges, test my limits, and, above all, enjoy the process.
What’s your favorite way to train during the off-season?
I love going on adventure trips with my partner—on foot or by bike, without any pressure to perform and without a set training plan. That way, I get in lots of hours of endurance training, discover new places, and enjoy spending time in nature. For me, these experiences form the perfect foundation for the next season.

Do you have a favorite workout partner?
My most frequent workout partner is my boyfriend, who is also my coach. We share a passion for endurance sports and motivate each other. At the same time, I appreciate the energy of group workouts just as much as longer solo sessions in the mountains, which help me recharge
How do you recharge your energy during the summer in preparation for the next season?
In the summer, I try to train without putting too much pressure on myself. Competitions serve more as milestones than as a means to chase results. I get a special boost of energy from little adventures outside the traditional competitive setting—long days in the mountains, new challenges, and the joy of being active outdoors.
What are your vacation plans for this summer?
I’d like to explore Austria, Slovenia, and Italy on a trip lasting several days. I also have a few long hikes planned, including the Hardergrat above Interlaken, as well as training for the Wild 70 at Wildstrubel by UTMB.

What are your goals for next season?
I haven't set any specific goals yet. After spending the past few years fully focused on the Olympics, I'd like to enjoy the summer first, gain new experiences, and take some time to step back. Then, in the fall, I'll set my goals for the upcoming season.
