ROMY ERTL: EVERYTHING IS GOOD AS LONG AS YOU'RE WILD.
The name Ertl is synonymous with great success in alpine skiing. Olympic medals, world championship titles and World Cup victories made Martina Ertl an icon of the sport. Now the next generation is emerging with her daughter Romy Ertl—ambitious, independent and already successful, including a medal at the Youth Olympic Games and several FIS race victories.

As a member of the extended World Cup squad and after her second World Cup start, the 18-year-old speaks in the interview about her beginnings on skis, as well as her expectations and goals.
Romy, how would you describe yourself in three words?
Wild, open-minded and funny.
Your first time on skis?
I stood on skis for the first time when I was about a year and a half old. Back then I watched my older cousin at a ski school race, and afterward—according to my mom—I kept saying, “Romy ski, Romy ski.” So she simply put me on skis.

Your mother was a very successful ski racer. Did you learn a lot from her?
Yes, definitely. My mom is still my biggest inspiration and role model. She’s been with me on the slopes from the very beginning and supports me with her experience and knowledge. Without her, I wouldn’t be the skier I am today.
Do you sometimes feel pressure because of your famous last name?
For me, it’s a joy and also an honor to carry on the Ertl name in skiing. I see it purely as an advantage to have a mother like that in this sport, and I’m very grateful for it.
What has been your most special moment in ski racing so far?
The most emotional moment was definitely my World Cup debut in Levi. Even though I didn’t finish, that day had a very positive impact on me and motivated me to keep working. I learned an incredible amount and took a lot from that experience.
What goals have you set for the next few years?
My goal is to give my best every single day—whether I’m on skis or in the gym—and to keep developing step by step, improving physically, technically on skis, and mentally.

When you’re not on skis, how do you like to spend your time?
I like spending my free time with my family the most, or meeting up with friends.
Your motto?
“Ski like a man” and “Everything is good as long as you’re wild". (from Die Wilden Kerle).
